Narratives

Please describe your institution's greenhouse gas mitigation strategies.

SUNY ESF is committed to expanding sustainability efforts on campus, in the local community, and beyond. ESF students, faculty, staff, and administration have united to craft a unique and creative plan, ECN2015, for reducing campus GHG emissions & energy use. This plan organizes all sustainability projects 2007-2015 into five major categories as follows: Energy Conservation Measures, Alternative Energy Projects, Green Building Energy Systems, Campus Action Plans, and Forest Carbon Sequestration. In total there are 40 projects across those areas for a 13,000+ MTCO2e per year offset by 2015. Approximately half of the GHG reduction come from the first four areas of the plan, with the remainder coming from carbon sequestration from management of a portion of ESF's forest properties.

A fundamental principle in ESF's plan is to implement an array of technologies and practices that promote research, teaching and outreach opportunities. Student engagement and service learning were part of preparing this climate action plan, implementing sustainable technologies on campus to date, and will be part of the future implementation of our initiatives.

Please describe your institution's plans to make sustainability a part of the curriculum for all students.

Every student, every course and every research endeavor at ESF touches on sustainability in one way or another. ESF is the only college in the nation devoted exclusively to the study of the environment. ESF offers specific undergraduate majors in bioprocess engineering, sustainable construction management, environmental biology, ecological engineering, environmental science, environmental studies, and natural resources management dedicated to environment issues. In addition the college offers 30 graduate programs in environmental subjects. ESF has recently added a minor and concentration in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Construction. A core part of the Climate Action Plan is to adopt a diverse set of technologies to provide our students and researcher with access to technology and data to incorporate in the curriculum.

ESF continues to expand the scope of its service learning initiative with increased, community involvement. Faculty use service learning to give students hands-on experience and community service helps students focus their career goals by affirming their chosen path or introducing them to new possibilities. Service learning will be another avenue to help our students experience sustainability learning by delivering programs in the community.

Please describe your institution's plans to expand research efforts toward the achievement of climate neutrality.

ESF has a tradition of sustainability research focused on the environment for nearly 100 years. Samples of sustainability focused research at ESF include: Adirondack Ecological Center, Center for Brownfield Studies, Biomass for Bio-Energy, Biofuels, & Bio-products, Green-Building, Renewable Energy Systems, EROI Net Energy Analysis, Great Lakes Research Consortium, Cellulose Research Institute, SUNY Center for Sustainable and Renewable Energy, Center for Urban Environment, Woody Biomass Program, Biodegradable Plastics from Renewable Sources, Ecological Engineering, Sustainability Emergy Analysis, Natural waste water treatment systems, and Living Machines.

Please describe your institution's plans to expand community outreach efforts toward the achievement of climate neutrality.

ESF offers outreach/continuing education courses and conferences to thousands of people in areas that include green building, bioprocessing, and environmental entrepreneurship. Highlights of Sustainability Focused Outreach Programs at ESF include: Sustainable Use of Renewable Energy, Sustainable Innovations in the Built Environment, Academy for Sustainable and Green Entrepreneurship, Advanced Training Workshops in Alternative Energy, Advanced PV Installer Course, International Conference on Biorefinery, Sustainably Energizing New York’s Creative Core, Annual Green Building Conference, and over a dozen ongoing K-12 environmental and sustainability outreach programs.
