2008 GHG Report for Lynchburg College

Submitted on September 15, 2008; last updated on October 25, 2008

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report July 1, 2006
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries Equity share approach
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

None

Emissions calculation tool used Clean Air-Cool Planet
Please describe why this tool was selected.

The CA-CP Campus Carbon Calculator was specifically developed for use on college and university campuses and is recommended by the ACUPCC for instituions that have not previously conducted energy audits using some other tool. Lynchburg College fit that category.

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

The Ca-CP Carbon Calculator worksheet pre-sets were applied to our data.

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? Third Assessment Report
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? members of the Positive Climate Committee
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

Individual members of the appointed committee, including faculty, staff, and students at Lynchburg College, were given particular components of the CA-CP Campus Carbon Calculator worksheet to focus on. Individuals identified appropriate campus offices and individuals within those offices who could give us the information available. We determined that some of the necessary data currently exists in forms that are challenging to access and other types of information currently do not exist. The committee will be working with appropriate offices to ammend our data and report fully in future years.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.

Lynchburg College does not engage in any agricultural activities nor does it currently possess any co-generation facilities.

Please describe any data limitations related to this submission and any major assumptions made in response to these limitations.

As stated in #9 above some of the pertinent information currently exists as financial data and not in units of energy purchased. We will be revising our report to include those data points for which we are able to reconstruct required information. In the case of air travel accounting, we are confident that no such data has been kept previously, likewise figures concerning communting. The Positive Climate Committee will work with appropriate offices at Lynchburg College to include these data in future reports.

Sequestration and Carbon Storage
Sequestration due to land owned by the institution 23,049 metric tons of CO2e
Description of how sequestration was calculated

Sequestration data was calcuated based on results reported in: Botkin, D.B., L.G. Simpson, and R.A. Nisbet. 1993. Biomass and carbon storage of the North American deciduous forest. Biogeochemstry 20(1): 1-17. We multipled the deciduous, forested acres owned by Lynchburg College by the carbon sequestion values reported for standing biomass and the carbon sequestraion values reported for photosynthesis and added the two values to arrive at total annual sequestration due to our preserved forested areas.

Carbon storage due to composting No information provided.
