2008 GHG Report for University of Mississippi

Submitted on September 18, 2009; last updated on September 18, 2009

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.
Total Per Full-Time Enrollment Per 1000 Square Feet % Offset
Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2) 77,229 metric tons of CO2e 6.5 metric tons of CO2e 17.4 metric tons of CO2e 0%
Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2 + 3) 93,827 metric tons of CO2e 7.9 metric tons of CO2e 21.1 metric tons of CO2e 0%
Net emissions 93,827 metric tons of CO2e 7.9 metric tons of CO2e 21.1 metric tons of CO2e N/A

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report July 1, 2007
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries Financial control approach
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

None.

Emissions calculation tool used Clean Air-Cool Planet
Please describe why this tool was selected.

Seems to be the default tool. Easiest to compare to other universities with the same standard.

One frustration - the spreadsheet is overly complex and the embedded VBA macros, bothersome for use on the Mac platform.

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

CA-CP v6.3

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? Third Assessment Report
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? Sustainability Faculty Fellow
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

A online spread sheet was created from the CA-CP inputs sheet and shared with relevant University staff from the physical plant, registrar, campus parking, landscaping, procurement, facilities planning, study abroad etc. After data was collected in March - May of 2009 it was checked and compiled. A meeting with university staff in August resolved some apparent discrepancies in energy unit conversion. Although some data was available going back to 2001. Most complete data were available from FY 2007 forward.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.

None.

Please describe any data limitations related to this submission and any major assumptions made in response to these limitations.

Commuting data was estimated by the following means. Available Faculty, Staff and Student addresses from the parking permit database were geocoded and straight line distances to the UM campus were calculated. Mean distance between Fac/Staff home address and campus was 5.2 miles. Mean distance for students was 2 miles. Commuting miles were calculated in the CA-CP tool assuming 1 automobile trip per student per day.

Airline miles were estimated from travel cost records using the bts.gov estimate of 13.6 cents/mile for domestic flights for FY 2008.
